“I am a dad at heart, and therefore my love for my own children as well as other children going through this system is what drove me to write this book.” – Leroy Barber
Leroy Barber’s sixth book takes on a slightly different topic: the foster care and adoption systems. Though he gives these systems the benefit of the doubt as having been inspired by good intentions, they have nonetheless had a devastating impact particularly on marginalized communities. The foster care and adoption systems have done some major damage in their efforts to “improve” the lives of people, places, and children.
Barber chose to focus on the foster care and adoption systems because of his extensive experience with them as a black family. This work is grounded in research, equity theory, and perhaps most importantly, lived experience as a community organizer, minister, and parent.
